LEGAZPI CITY — Atty. Adrian G. Miras, designated PIO, attended as representative of the National Police Commission Regional Office 5 the 2nd Quarterly Meeting of the Legazpi City Blood Council at the Mayor’s Conference Room, Legazpi City Hall, at 3:00 PM on May 29, 2015.
Dr. Fulbert Alec R. Gillego, the City Health Officer and the Mayor’s Co-Chairperson in the Blood Council, reported before the body the accomplishments of the Blood Council and of the City Health Office with respect to blood donations and awareness campaigns in the year 2014. One of the highlights in 2014 was the successful mobile blood donation activities, which resulted in 2,333 blood donations—the highest in the 2007-2015 blood donation data (the data for 2015 covers January 1 to May 25).
Other activities conducted in 2014 to raise public awareness of the importance of donating blood include the Walk for Safe Blood, as well as several television and radio interviews, promotion, and news coverage of mobile blood donation activities.
For 2015, particularly in July in which the Blood Month is celebrated, the Blood Council and City Health Office plan to hold an awareness walk, bloodletting activities, slogan-making contest, and recognition of stakeholders that have provided a certain number of donors to the mobile blood donation activities.
The target blood donations for 2015 is 1,963, which is 1% of the total population of the City. Currently, the City Health Office has received 715 blood donations. Dr. Gillego urged the members of the Blood Council to commit a certain number of donors so that the Council can reach the target by the end of the year. He also added that agencies may invite the City Health Office whenever they plan to hold bloodletting activities any time of the year, and the Office will shoulder the cost or part of it, if the availability of funds becomes a hindrance to agencies. Also, agencies with notable contributions will be duly recognized and awarded in awarding ceremonies in the regional and national levels. The City is working towards being the country’s leading advocate on blood donations and blood-donation awareness campaigns.
Meanwhile, the City Mayor, Hon. Noel E. Rosal, expressed his confidence that the target will be reached this year with the cooperation of all the stakeholders.
